Under the new data price regime, the NCC (Nigerian Communications Commission) has directed all Telecom operators in the country to review their current data prices to align with the new price floor and implement same by the 1st of December 2016, while defaulters risk having sanctions imposed on them. The new data regime has been confirmed by Adebayo Shittu, the communications minister, who said through such increase, the government would be able to develop the sector and build more infrastructure.
An official of the NCC ,who has chosen to remain anonymous reveals that some new entrants into the market put pressure on the commission to increase data tariffs.
The new entrants into the market complained that there was no way they could break even if they operated on same data regime with the likes of MTN, Glo, Etisalat and Airtel.
The official says the commission yielded to their pressure last month when it notified the operators of the new rate.
Big operators are directed to take 0.90K/MB from their subscribers.
